Oh they were, they hurt and he wanted out of them, but there was still the mess, and Lumi was still scared.

Master Caleb made himself less big, crouching so they could were more even-footed, and didn't grab or push or shout. He was smiling steadily and talking soft, and if this was something that happened to everybody--to every pet--maybe he really wasn't mad, even if there was something pinched and smoky in his personal scent, toasting a little when he said good boy.

It was a good sound. Those were good words! Maybe he'd get to hear them again, if he climbed out of there like Master Caleb wanted? Lumi's tail stayed tightly put, wagging cautiously at the tip.

Still, he knew he was, kinda, fragrant. Humans could not smell as well as pets could: Febreeze proved that. So maybe Master Caleb didn't know that Lumi was--not hungry, it wasn't food he'd been dreaming about all day. But maybe the human couldn't smell it quite the way Lumi did, nostrils thick with himself on every breath in, all sugar and pungent ache.

Lumi wasn't sure how that could be normal, but Master Caleb said it was. Said it was just part of growing up. Somehow the human seemed to know, and more than that, he seemed to understand whatever was happening to Lumi. Master Caleb knew what to do. And he was so kind.

Lumi decided, and slunk forward out of his hiding spot on hands and knees.

He sat, even though it was--tight, and rubbed intensely--he shivered, but stayed up, hands bent the proper way, paws down.

Stay. Oh, so tight.

"Like this?" Not daring to ask if it was good. "Master Caleb, can--" No! He shouldn't ask for things. But he could ask about things, if he used his words properly, clean and clipped. "Should, they come off? Can--I can take them off?"

He couldn't help squirming, but he didn't reach down. Wouldn't until he was told. His paws trembled.

He could be good.
