True, humans couldn't smell as well as pets; evolution had prioritized other things with their species. But Caleb knew enough about pets people to know that Lumi would probably be broadcasting 'come and get me, big boy' to every pet person in the area if he were outdoors. Which was all the more reason not to take him out tonight; not only would it be irresponsible, but Lumi just... wasn't quite ready for that kind of attention from other pets. Maybe when he was a bit more settled, they could talk about it, but not now.
Now, just getting him to come out of the closet- part of him as amused at the unwitting metaphor, but it was a small part at the moment- felt like a victory. "Good dog," he said as Lumi crept out, smile broadening slightly at the extremely cautious wag. Though sitting that way had to be making a bad situation worse as far as the dog's discomfort was concerned. Caleb could see him trembling, especially his hands. And he noticed the hasty correction, though he filed it away for now. Something to ask about later, but there were other priorities now. Like getting him out of those soaked jeans and getting him some much needed relief.
"But you don't have to sit like that. And yes, you can definitely take them off; standing up or sitting on the bed would probably make it a lot easier. I can help you, if you want." Caleb stood back up himself, then bent down, offering Lumi his hand. "Here; take my hand, and I'll help you up. Tight as things look down there right now, you might have a bit of trouble getting up on your own, and we don't want you to fall."
