But now Lumi wanted something else, even though it was wrong. That awful dream had put it on him, and he'd drawn Chance right along into it, down into his--his want, his own pleasure. The Sunday channel called it his temptation, and perfidious, and other fat liturgical noises he mostly knew meant he was a bad dog.
Lumi was bad, and he wanted bad things, and the older golden could've done many things about it, in turn. He could've pushed Lumi away, could've fought with him, could've shouted for his humans--and from what Lumi had seen of them so far, they would have come. And they'd been pretty upset with Lumi, before.
Except Chance did none of those things. Instead, just like he'd helped Lumi up from his hiding place, and just as he'd coaxed Lumi away from the harsh wooden angles of his makeshift toy, Chance simply helped Lumi turn with him and offered his knee, broad and warm.
Lumi perched there with a grin, feeling his ears go vertical, tail swishing as he slid in close. Chance stroked warm hands up his bare back, lingering just so in his fur, and Lumi shifted eagerly into the offered crease of Chance's knee.
Lumi pushed his hips flat so he could rock without knocking them both over--soft at first, then quicker as the golden reassured him--as they leaned into each other. Chance stroked his back, soothing, bracing, making all his fur prickle.
He let out a whine for that kiss, soft, and couldn't help thrusting forward. Like that, like that, yes. So good. The joy of it curled tight in his belly, soured with the certainty that it was wrong. Except--Chance wasn't angry with him. Was encouraging him, a little, just enough that he knew it was safe. That it was going to be okay.
Even as the useless, ugly, infertile part of Lumi began to stir. It caught on the shorts, pinched, pushed awkwardly against itself and just generally got in the way, twitching with a mind of its own.
"Mmm," low, "Sorry," leaning into the hot velvet loop of Chance's ear, hardly breathing, nothing a human could hear. "Gotta be quiet." With a tight, delighted curl of his tail: "I like this. I like it when you--nnh--"
Lumi bit his lip, pushed his face against the soft, soft fabric over Chance's shoulder, but no sound came out. He was almost wound too tight to even breathe. Lumi shuddered, felt his damp thighs pull tight together, and shivered his way off that sharp, bright edge, the bottom dropping out of his stomach in a soaring swoop.
"Chance," at last, gritted rough into his shirt. "Oh, oh thank you, that's," sighing. "Better."
Even as the rest of him sat up obstinately. He knew better; it would go away if he ignored it. And he'd already tempted the other dog too far.

Nonetheless Lumi clearly needed it, so he held him and stroked him, gently nuzzling against one velvet-furred ear as Lumi buried his face in his shirt, his hips grinding on Chance's leg with frantic little thrusts until he came with a shudder and a soft gasp, sagging slightly against Chance in relief. "Glad I could help," he murmured in response to Lumi's thanks, still gently stroking his back. "But seems like you need a little more yet. C'mon back to my bed. More comfortable than standing."
He didn't really like to leave a job half finished, and Lumi must have been every bit as frustrated as he'd thought to need a second round outside of heat. Still it was best to keep Lumi's bed as a space that was all his own, a safe place to retreat to if need be. Their single beds were, as the name implied, not really meant for two, but were sturdy enough to support them both, and given the activity he had in mind, the snug fit for the two of them would be more of a boon than a hinderance.

"I want to," drawn into a soft, soft whine so high up it was a whisper. "Chance, I like this, I like you! But I'm scared." His ears dipped back: "I--had such a bad dream."
It came out small. It sounded almost silly, except he meant it. Only most of the truth, leaving out the hot, wet flash of the great big knife--that sharp plunge deep as nature, final as teeth.
Snip.
He didn't need to say that, but he needed to say something more--it wasn't fair to the other pet, to leave him guessing. It wasn't Chance's fault that Lumi felt this way, hot and cold and all churned up inside. Chance was kind and patient, still stroking his back in broad, gentle circles.
Lumi paused, and thought, and couldn't quite make himself look up at the older golden.
"Vet's gonna fix me." Certain, feeling the fabric puff where he mumbled into Chance's shirt. "See, I'm--" he knew ugly human words for himself and his nature, the kindest of which was, "I'm a two-bit. Never gonna family, but I am worth money. To the Kennel Club, or--or Sit n' Stay or--" it shuddered up his whole body, out the tip of his tail, "Fido's."
"Oh, Chance, what if they catch us?" He hung on tight. "I don't want you hurt."

He took a deep breath and nuzzled Lumi's cheek and ear, continuing to stroke his back reassuringly. "Lumi," he said quietly, "no one here is going to hurt me. Or you. If we get caught, we might get scolded for waking other pets up , but nothing else. The humans here are kind and understanding. Bad dreams happen and sometimes pets need a bit of help working through them."
"Everyone was worried about you, you know, the way you reacted when you were brought in. No one knew why you panicked like that. That's part of why I asked them to let you stay with me; I was hoping you might tell me why, and I'm glad you did."
"Lumi, no one here at the shelter would never send a pet to a place like that or take money from them. They want the pets here to find forever homes with loving humans that'll take good care of them. They hate those sorts of places and part of the work they do is to see them shut down. They want pets like us to be safe, healthy, and cared for, and those places are the exact opposite of that."
"And the vets here would never do the kind of thing you dreamed either. Dr. Gibbs has been taking care of me the whole time I've been here, and he's never done anything like that, not against the pet's will. And neither has Dr. Baines; she's been here for a year, and she's very nice lady. Nether of them would do anything to hurt you or any of the other pets here. They want us to be happy and healthy."
"And they'll tell you, like I'm telling you now, there's nothing wrong with being the way you are. Your old owners just didn't like it because it meant they couldn't use you to make money. But no one's going to treat you like that here. And no one's going to say you're bad or wrong just because of how you were born." He nuzzled, then kissed Lumi's cheek. "You're safe here Lumi. And you're going to be alright."

He just--wanted to be here, in the warm brace of Chance's touch. It was good. It was helping. So Lumi leaned into being nuzzled and sniffed Chance back, rubbing with his muzzle and only just daring to lick. The tiniest friendliest kiss back.
"Worried?" He wasn't sure if that felt good, to have someone worry about him. "I'm--I didn't mean to frighten them, or hurt anybody." Lumi whined in his teeth. "I'm glad they're letting us stay together. But I don't want to go--I know I need to, I know I should."
It stuck, whimper-shape, tight in his throat. He almost said Dr. Gibbs is nice to you, but I'm a freak. That was very mean! He had no way of knowing if it was true. And it was unfair to everyone: to the kind desk lady, and maybe to Dr. Baines, too.
It was especially unfair to Chance, who was taking such nice care of him. So Lumi held it in. Held that thought, held it and took a deep, steadying breath thick with the warm scent of Chance's soft fur. He trusted those good, steady touches and let himself relax, taken in hand.
There was plenty wrong with him, a hot streak of it all the way up his body, but--
Chance didn't seem to think it was bad at all. And he'd been so very kind.
Lumi's tail fairly curled for that kiss, pattering a bright rhythm against his leg. He followed Chance to the edge of the bed. He wasn't sure how they were both going to--it would be a snug fit. He sat, trying to be good, only it was hard to, with his tail still going. With his shorts all tight.
"I," he squirmed, a tangle of several emotions at once, and focused on the bright, true thing at the heart of it. "I'm glad I met you."
