Character History
Character History: On the early evening of September 22, 1982, arcade owner Kevin Flynn gave Clu commands to hack the ENCOM computer system. Clu began searching - along with Bit - in his modified Tank for code that would prove that an ENCOM programmer named Ed Dillinger stole Flynn's video games and presented them to the ENCOM executives as his own. The games soon became fantastic sellers and Dillinger was promoted to Executive V.P.; Flynn had been fired by Dillinger shortly after.

While Clu was searching for the evidence, the system's security found him and began hot pursuit via Recognizers. Clu tried to destroy them with his tank projectiles, but there were too many of them. As Clu attempted to get away, he was ambushed by a Recognizer. Clu fired at it and successfully destroyed it, but its remains rained down on Clu's tank. The vehicle went out of control as the blast radius lifted the tank to its side and crashed into one of the many walls in the maze of the memory sector.
Clu quickly escaped the tank and tried to run away, but the recognizer caught him with its legs and "detached" him from the system. Flynn had failed again in trying to get the evidence he needed.
A little while later, Clu was sent to the heart of ENCOM system, where the Master Control Program was located. The MCP briefly interrogated him:
Guard: "Got a pirate program here... says his name's Clu."
MCP: "What did he pull?"
Guard: "He came into the system with a stolen password, and we caught him trying to raid a high-clearance memory."
Clu: "No! I must've gotten in there by mistake, I was-!"
MCP: "Who programmed you?"
Clu: "I was simply-!"
Clu was thrown through the air and landed on a device that was slowly derezzing him.
MCP: "You're in trouble, program. Make it easy on yourself. Who's your user?"
Clu: "Forget it, mister high-and-mighty Master Control! You aren't making me talk."
MCP: "Suit yourself."

Clu screamed as the device on the wall derezzed him, with the MCP absorbing all of his functions so he could enhance and expand his own. Right after Clu was derezzed, the MCP found out that Clu's user was Kevin Flynn.
Clu was loyal to Kevin Flynn. He refused to give the name of his user to the MCP, despite the fact that he was in a near-death situation. As a result, he was deleted by the MCP, and it was from that point that Clu was pulled to Nautilus.

The basics of much of Clu's history in Nautilus can be summed up in his Angelii Ascension Essay and Ashura Ascension Essay. Clu went from hating the forces that pulled him from his simple existence as a hacking program inside a computer to embracing and enjoying the much broader possibilities being out in the worlds granted him. And as things eventually came to a head and there was a chance to restart the natural cycle of Waking, Clu joined with the others who remained in Nautilus to defeat the last fragment of the rogue Deva, Isis, and save all of reality from an eternity of being glass statues.

With Isis defeated and the natural cycle of Waking restored, Clu and Bit set off into the Between to travel the worlds and help some Users along the way.

Character Motivation: Loyalty and curiosity. Clu's always been a creature of loyalty, first to his User, then to his friends in Nautilus, and then to the entire multi-verse; he was created to be a hacker, but he chose to fight for the Users. Hacking is still in his base code though, and thus he's naturally curious about a lot of things, from the people and worlds around him to random bits of trivia.

Personality: When he was first created, Clu was very much a lone wolf, operating independently for Flynn with Bit as his only close ally. He was friendly with most, but never really made friends with any other programs. He was at once part of and apart from the system he lived in, and on top of that, he knew he had a dangerous function. Why get close to anyone when he'd have to leave on a mission on a moment's notice? Why form bonds that would only hurt the other program if he were to be derezzed in a dark corner of some far-flung system?

Ironically, it was only after his death in his own world that he really came into his own. It was a long process, but Clu eventually became close to a number of people in Nautilus, becoming less rigid and strictly logical in his way of thinking and looking at the world (even if he still finds Users to be very weird in a variety of ways). The revelation that he was part of a real community and that he had friends who cared deeply for him and he for them helped to open him up to the world at large, and expand his horizons. He no longer longs for a return to the simple binary of his former life in system, and is much less resistant to the idea of his own growth and change.

He is still stubborn though; 'dogged and relentless', as his User put it. Get firmly on either his bad or his good side, and it'll take a lot to get you off of it. And once he's got a goal in mind he can easily slip back into 'mission mode' and become much more focused than one might expect. At the end of the day, he is still a program; having a task to accomplish with a clear end goal is his comfort zone, and too much idleness is grating.

Don't take that to mean that he's a serious stick in the mud though. He's generally friendly, even playful and mischievous. He was literally created to give security forces the runaround, after all, and loves a good prank or a bit of nonviolent trouble. Though the keyword there is nonviolent. While he can be provoked into a fight when necessary, when possible he's more likely to try and talk his way out of trouble or flee; that whole giving security the runaround thing again. After all, sticking around to fight is a great way to get caught.

And Clu's time in Nautilus taught him a great deal about the importance of choice and change. He's come to believe that anyone can change if they want to, and that the choices one makes ultimately drive that change. After all, if he- a program who was literally constructed to do follow a specific function- can manage to change and shift his perspective, then anyone can. And relatedly, he believes that those who claim to have had no choice but to act as they did are simply trying to defend or excuse their actions. After all, even choosing not to act is still a choice.

And for better or worse, Clu will rarely choose not to act. The forms those actions might take may vary widely, and the results even more so, but that's never stopped him before. And it's not likely to change with the addition of magic.

Canon Strength/Weaknesses: Not for nothing did Flynn call Clu the best program he'd ever written. Clu is extremely skilled at his function and will continue to be so, even on this side of the screen. He is programmed to be able to learn and adapt to new systems and situations, so while many things about a new world or situation might throw him at first, he's generally quick to find his feet.

The delicate and specialized circuitry and sensors on Clu's palms allowed him to interface with and manipulate the coding and data of a system, and outside it gives him an especially delicate sense of touch and an ability to somewhat manipulate the flow of energy within a system. He usually keeps his gloves rezzed up to mute the effect, however, as the ability can't be shut off and tends to give him a headache if overused. He also possesses proximity sensors that alert him to approaching energy signatures and built in sensor baffles to prevent others from detecting his own energy signature, though both of these are likely to be of very limited use in the Kingdoms, unless they can be adapted to detect biological signatures or baffle more standard senses. He can somewhat control the brightness of his circuits, but he can't completely mute their light short of physically covering them, which tends to make him stand out in dark environments; this can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the circumstances.

As for other abilities, Clu's physical strength is superior to most humans, though not to Superman levels or anything. But he would probably be able to easily lift and carry a person of his relative size and weight, or bench press a good bit more than most. He can also speak and read binary, though the speaking aspect is really only useful if there's someone else around who can also speak it, or at least understand it. Were he in system, he could also send pings- brief thoughts or feelings in data form- but that ability is nonfunctional outside the system, barring future enhancements. He can also process and recall data significantly faster than most humans, and with greater accuracy. Not that he doesn't make mistakes or forget things, it just happens less frequently. He can also pilot a modified game-tank and lightcycle and could probably learn to do the same with a tank or motorcycle from this side of the screen if needed.

As far as weaknesses go, Clu is a program, adapted to life within the system and living outside it has some challenges. While he can consume User food, he doesn't really get anything out of it other than the taste. For purposes of 'nutrition' and not starving to death, he'll need energy, either on the form of liquid energy that he can drink, or via an ETC (energy transfer conduit) that will allow him to absorb it via direct induction through his circuits. His vision is also adapted for low light, so bright lights, especially bright flashes of light can easily leave him temporarily blinded, or in extreme cases, may even burn out his visual sensors, necessitating repair.

Which is another disadvantage. Clu and all the clothing that he comes with are made of computer code, and while he can repair his own clothing, repairing himself is much more difficult. (Any clothing he acquires later will obviously be normal clothing and exempt from this; just the circuit-suit he comes with is made of code.) Mild to moderate damage tends to repair on its own given time, energy, and care as his systems are designed to be both rugged and efficient, but any major or particularly delicate damage will require a skilled programmer to repair. High temperatures are also not great for him, especially when combined with high humidity.

Clu will be arriving with a Legacy-style identity disc (with its weapon functions disabled, much like Fenton's Gizmoduck armor; at least initially, it will only function as memory storage/code access), so there will be a means to access his code for repairs if need be, but that still requires permissions. Currently no one in the Kingdoms would have permission to access Clu's code and data, so Clu will have to grant someone access once he finds someone who's both trustworthy and has the right skills. A solid strike to the disc dock is also painful enough to be temporarily disabling for a program- think the equivalent of a man being kneed in the groin- and if done right, may even force a soft reset (which can also be a handy way to snap him out of an extreme emotional state).

Non-physical weaknesses include being bound by his programmed directive- to help Flynn in any way he needs-, and his own stubbornness. And while not really a strength or a weakness, but still going here since I don't know where else to stick it, the physical characteristics that make Clu's appearance differ from that of a normal human are the intricate, glowing yellow circuits on his skin and the less complex ones on his suit. He also has a disc dock on his back to, well, dock his disc; this passes through his code clothing, but will be covered up by normal clothing. And also, if one looks closely, in can be seen that the pupils of his eyes are hexagons, rather than circles.

Also Clu's bit will be arriving with him, as their coding is connected. While it can understand spoken language perfectly well, Bit otherwise has roughly the intelligence level of a smart dog. It has no offensive capabilities whatsoever (unless you sit on it by accident, in which case you'll get some 'no' spines in a very uncomfortable place), but can serve scouting functions pretty well when it's on task. When it's not on task, it's easily distracted by shiny things and the like and may get into mischief if it wanders away from its program.

Apprentice Sorcerer Application
Class: Machine, all the way. Not only does it suit his personality extremely well, he's literally a computer program made inside a system. Pretty much the definition of machine class.
Weapon: A metal bo staff. A collapsible one like this if possible, but if not, a regular metal staff is fine too.

Sample Section

First Person Sample: [Clu appears on the network, sipping a mug of glowing liquid.]

Greetings, everyone. I was wondering; how exactly do you go about getting a proper function here? I mean aside from needing a way to get munny, which seems to be necessary for most things around here, I also just need something to do. Training is all well and good, but I need a day to day function too.

And do any of you have any suggestions for ones you think I should try? I'm not especially familiar with the kinds of functions most people seem to have around here, but I am a fast learner.

Third Person Sample: Clu looked with satisfaction at his newly purchased filing cabinet. A bit basic, true, but until he was able to get himself a proper terminal it would have to do for data storage. And he already had a great deal of data to store. Notes on the world he found himself in, on those that inhabited it, on the system of magic that the world operated on, and on his fellow Apprentices who practiced it. And he was filling it out more all the time; one never knew what sort of data might come in handy, after all.

"Now I just need to organize it," Clu said to himself, looking at the notebooks and folders of paper stacked on his night-table... and scattered on his bed... and laying here and there around the rest of the apartment. "This... is gonna take awhile." Also he really needed to invest in a desk of some sort; if he couldn't have a terminal, at least he could have a proper work surface. His roommate had already expressed their frustration with him appropriating the dining table or bit of counter space they had for his own use when he wanted to work and they wanted to eat.

Maybe he could figure out some kind of magical equivalent to the Bending he'd used on his house back in Nautilus? If he could calculate how to handle that sort of data compression here in the Kingdoms it could give everyone a bit more space to work with, both for working, and just in general. But currently, that was all in the future. Right then, he had files to organize. He set to it with a will; even hackers had to do a bit of data pushing now and then.
